About the Rider:
Quentin van Marle

I am first and foremost a journalist, travel writing a speciality - but not one of those hacks who promotes mass tourism or cheap travel to all the usual places. Rather, I'm an off-the-beaten-track sort of traveller, and always on the hunt for off-the-beaten-track stories.
An extreme example of this was the 31 days and nights I spent on an inhospitable and completely uninhabited Caribbean island for the Sunday Times, surviving as a kind of Robinson Crusoe. That was in 1994, and I've still got the scars to show for it.
A good chunk of my career has been as the editor of a number of glossy monthlies, covering the fields of travel, yachting, aviation, alternative medicine, business and leisure. My freelance work has appeared in the Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, Sunday Express, Daily Mail, Financial Times, and in countless weekly and monthly periodicals.
I am the author of three books: Marooned (1996); Boomerang Road (2004); Ride the Blazing Rainbow (2006).
